Kumayl Ibn Ziyad Nakha'i was a confidant amongst the companions of Amir al Muminin, Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as.) and this sublime Du'a was first heard from the beautiful, though anguished, voice of Imam Ali. According to Allama Majlisi (on whom be Allah's Mercy) Kumayl had attended an assembly in the Mosque at Basra which was addressed by Imam Ali in the course of which the night of the 15th of Shaban was mentioned. Imam Ali said-"Whosoever keeps awake in devoutness on this night and recites the Du'a of Prophet Khizr, undoubtedly that person's supplication will be responded to and granted. When the assembly at the Mosque had dispersed, Kumayl called at the house where Imam Ali was staying, and requested him to acquaint him with Prophet Khizr's "Du'a". Imam Ali asked Kumayl to sit down, record and memorise the "Du'a" which Imam Ali dictated to Kumayl.
Imam Ali then advised Kumayl to recite this "Du'a" on the eve of (i.e. evening preceding) every Friday, or once a month or at least once in every year so that, added Imam Ali, "Allah may protect thee from the evils of the enemies and the plots contrived by impostors. O' Kumayl! in consideration of thy companionship and understanding, I grant thee this honour of entrusting this "Du'a" to thee."

On receiving the invitations he sent his cousin Hazrat Muslim (a.s.) as his emissary to the Kufans with a letter addressed to them. Yazid, the Caliph of the time, asked the Governor of Basrah, Ubaydu 'Illah Ibn Ziyad, to take control of Kufa and told him to arrest Hazrat Muslim (a.s.) and kill him and do all that was necessary to suppress the Shiahs in Kufa. Ibne Ziyad sealed Kufa in such a way that no one could go in or out of the city without the governor's permission. It was Ziyad's orders relayed to the armies in Karbala, that resulted in the massacre of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and his companions at Karbala.
On the 8th of Zil-Hajj 60 A.H., late in the evening, tired, hungry and exhausted, Hazrat Muslim (a.s.) knocked at the door of a house on the outskirts of the city. A lady opened the door. Hazrat Muslim (a.s.) requested for a little water to quench his thirst. The lady gave him water. When she learnt who he was, she invited him in and offered him shelter for the night. This lady was called Tau'aa. She gave Hazrat Muslim (a.s.) some food and water and took him to a room where he might spend the night. Unfortunately, Tau'aa's son was a spy and reported Hazrat Muslim's whereabouts to Ziyad. Ziyad's soldier's captured Hazrat Muslim and threw him off the roof of building on Ziyad's orders. Hazrat Muslim (a.s.) was calm and composed as he was dragged up the steps. He was reciting "Allahu Akber" until the last moment. Then there was an absolute silence followed by a thud as the head of Hazrat Muslim (a.s.) was chopped and his body fell to the ground. This was on 9th of Zil-Hajj. Immediately after Hazrat Muslim (a.s.) was martyred, Hani ibn-e-Urwah (a.r.) as well was dragged to the roof top and executed.
