| Scriabin - "Black Mass" Sonata, Op. 68 - 431 sec Scriabin's penultimate sonata; an aural representation of darkness and evil. A very cohesive work, its musical material is derived from four short motives which Scriabin constantly tranforms throughout its duration (ie. notice how he transforms the 'recounting a legend' theme into a huge vertiginous drop just before the grotesque march towards the end). It's filled with sardonic mockery, convulsions (Scriabin had a fascination with trills), and highly dissonant harmonies. Tags:Scriabin evil piano music sonata black mass head spinning |
