| Sodium Explosions - 45 sec I bought a little sodium on ebay and decided to have some fun with it!
Sodium reacts violently with oxygen. The reason it doesn't react in the air because air is 70% nitrogen. If you put the sodium in an oxygenated room, then it would react very violently. Because water is much more dense than oxygen, the sodium reacts a lot faster in water. Also, when you put the sodium in water, it releases the hydrogen from the water and since hydrogen is flammable, it makes a bigger BOOM! Be careful though. Because when the sodium reacts with H2O (water), it kicks out the hydrogen to form Na2O (two sodium molecules for every oxygen molecule). Na2O is an acid so it BURNS! Do NOT touch the remaining liquid in the water container! It WILL burn you! Trust me! It hurts!
Have fun!
but,
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!! Tags: Sodium Water Na H2O |
